Somalia’s interior ministry on June 21, 2015 said it foiled an attack by al-Shabab militants on an intelligence facility in Mogadishu, Somalia. The al-Qaida-aligned terrorist group says it killed 10 intelligence agents and lost three fighters, while the Somali government says it killed at least four militants and suffered no casualties
MOGADISHU, Somalia, June 21 (Harowo) — Al-Qaida-aligned terrorist group al-Shabab attacked an intelligence facility in Somalia’s capital on Sunday, causing a disputed number of casualties on both sides.
The militants reportedly made a one-hour post-dawn assault on a training facility for the National Intelligence and Security Agency in Mogadishu.
Al-Shabab claimed credit for the attack, saying it lost three fighters and killed at least 10 intelligence agents after setting off a car bomb and storming the compound.
The Somali government says it “foiled the attack” and lost no personnel. Following the assault, the interior ministry displayed the dead bodies of four militants to media members.
The BBC reports that after the car bomb detonated, the militants mistakenly stormed a civilian house next to their intended target. It quoted interior ministry spokesman Mohamed Yusuf as saying the gunmen were “taken out before they reached their objective.”
Al-Shabab has in the past increased attacks during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which began Wednesday.
The Guardian reports the group killed eight police officers near Mogadishu on Saturday.
Last week, Kenya’s armed forces said it killed 11 al-Shabab fighters and lost two of its own soldiers when the militants attacked a military base near the country’s northern coast.
Kenya in 2011 deployed military forces to Somalia to battle the al-Qaida-affiliated terrorist group. Since then, al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for a multitude of attacks in Kenya’s coastal and northeastern region, including in April when masked al-Shabab gunmen killed nearly 150 people at Garissa University College.Xafiiska Shabakadaha Harowo.com iyo Boramanews.co Naga Soo Xidhiidh Cinwaankayga ah Harowonews@gmail.com Fiiro Gaara:- Qoraalada iyo aragtiyaha kala duwan kama turjumayso fikirka shabakada Harowo iyo Boramanews.co ee waxay gaar u tahay qoraaga ku saxeexan.
