Somaliland : Gabooye Minority Clan Demand Justice
Gabooye minority clan of Somaliland have recently voiced out their frustration with the government and have staged demonstrations both in Somaliland and in front of Whitehall in London , United Kingdom.
A recent protest in Burao which was sparked by a wide anger among the minority clan was caused by the detention of two women and a man in Aynabo district of Somaliland for more than a month.
The two women and the man were acquitted of any crime by the district court in Aynabo but were kept in prison.
They were attacked by locals while in prison and presumably raped in prison. The three were later released from prison after a wide Internet media coverage of their plight in prison and public demonstrations in the the country.
The victims claimed that they were not given treatment for the sustained injuries during their ordeal in prison.
The people from Gabooye of Burao have accused Somaliland government of intentionally abandoning these poor victims under the captivity of brutal prison officers.
Gabooye demonstrators in London have also complained quote:
“It is a demonstration to raise awareness for the continual suffering of Somaliland, and the minority tribes in Somalia. There is continued rape, kidnap, murder and all sorts of torture. To be quite frank, this is getting out of hand. The last straw was two women who were kidnapped and raped by members of the Military. They have suffered serious injuries, and the government keeps on covering up this issue.”
Gabooye are Somali ethnic people who have inhabited in Somaliland and Somalia for centuries and deserve to be equally treated same as the other clans in the country.
