ADAL: Start Up And Growth Continues…

Adal development Organization Borama.

As a result of years of conflict, war and the accompanying political, economical and social upheavals created a tremendous impact to the society. This changed the ethics and behavior of the people. Mothers who used to raise useful and healthy children are no longer available. Most of them sell Kat in the blazing sun from morning until midnight to win the bread of their children and there is no domestic helper who can take care of the children.

Most of the men practice the bad habit of chewing Kat, and this causes stress. The great family values of the past disappeared and family problems are on the increase. There are men who sell Kat and other small retail jobs and win their living from this hand to mouth business. The remaining men and women are on the business sector. These are the ones the government derives taxes from. They also take a big role in assisting the destitute population as far as possible. The very small populations who are employed are not getting enough salaries but they depend on charging the services they do for the public.

There are families who entirely depend on remittances from abroad and God knows what will happen to them if that cease for any reason. The remaining families do not have an income at all and mostly depend mainly on the assistance of their relatives, which is of course a great burden. Many children abandoned school because their parents cannot afford to pay the school fees. The most challenging of all is the young population who are in the streets without jobs.

Another pressing thing is electricity. This basic service is in scarce and inefficient. Very few people have electricity in their homes and these are not fully lighted in order to minimize the cost, which is 1.25 dollar per kilowatt. Charcoal also is very expensive and people are cutting the trees indiscriminately and a great damage is inflicted to the environment. Now charcoal comes from the east Burao region. We need to explore cheaper alternative energy like solar and wind etc and we need an expert advise on this matter.

The grazing land of Ogo and Guban, which the people used to depend for their livestock, are no longer there. People illegally occupied and made farms of their own. Every body is now confined to his small farm if any to rear his livestock. God help those who have no farms of their own. Land reform is the biggest challenge for any authority who decide to enact a law of land distribution. The aim of this report is not to put you off but to give you a clear picture and the reality on the ground that your loved ones are living in and that there is a genuine case for support.

Adal development Organization is formed out of need in order to assist our people. Non-profit or community base organizations mainly depend on their constituents for resources. The people are willing to contribute to the organization but the financial difficulties surrounding every family make it difficult for a person to meet his obligations. We are sure the people will respond positively when we implement projects practically and this of course depend on the availability of funds.

Adal  will also expand its activates in the other regions of Somaliland in order to protect, promote and advocate  for the interest of the region which was often denied by the successive governments of Somalia. This will also strengthen interrelations and the unity among Somaliland communities.

Inshallah we will pursue our mission in confidence and if there is a will there is a way. We are eagerly expecting the assistance of Awdal intellect to help, advocate and open the visibility to do something better than ever thought we could and be our support when we need an answer and guidance. We do not want this forum to be a one-man show but will be run in a way different from the existing ones.

God willing we want to maintain an environment where individuals working together can perform the job with perfect understanding and unity. We will show confidence and fiduciary responsibility to do the job to influence work standard. Adal as an independent organization having its personality will closely cooperate with the local government who started to implement development programs.

It is in our agenda in future to provide cultural education programs for your children as well as documentary films of Awdal region such as our water springs, mountain range and the wild life in pictures for your entertainment and to keep you in touch with your homeland. We will report other potentialities of the region like minerals as well. We need an expert opinion how this can be possible in the Internet.

Before we close our letter we wish to take this opportunity to thank the following who sent us the first donations and within days we will inshallah send you a receipt number on which the amount is accounted in our books.
