Press Release: Start up and growth of Adal Organization

At present there are civic societies, nonprofit organizations and local NGOs in the country. They vary from one region to the other. The most potential ones are in Hargeisa the capital. These organizations work hard to develop their country. They began working since the early nineties and their presence can be felt in Somaliland today. The areas these organizations made progressive achievements are:

• The peace and reconciliation process
• The protection of the environment
• The awareness of the society about the human and women’s rights.
• The rehabilitation of the infrastructure
• The democratization and good governance.
• The health, education and social sectors

Despite all the progresses these organizations still face serious problems:
Lack of understanding of the role, identity and responsibility of these organizations by the community in general.

Lack of contributory constituent base on which these organizations like this mostly depend on because of hard living conditions and serious unemployment problem. Knowledge limitations and misconceptions among the society the kat problem which reached an alarming stage. Uneasy relations with donor agencies.

Despite all these challenges these organizations are willing to build confidence and mutual understanding and work closely with the central and local governments for the benefit of our society as a whole.

Adal Development organization

This organization was born out of the historic visit of Mrs. Ikram Haji Daud the only female member elected to the Somaliland parliament from Awdal region to the United States of America. Our brothers and sisters abroad raised the question of establishing an organization which will represent the internal and external communities of Awdal and undertake all the development needs of our people.                  

This is meant to shape a new strategic plan, build more potential constituent base and a frame work for action that can help, raise the life standard of our community. This new strategic planning, the development, implementation and assessment are an on going continuous process which will adapt to environmental changes.

We are optimistic with your expertise, financial support and trust will lead this organization down the road and do viable and sustainable socio-economic progress. Keeping in mind that your parents, brothers, sisters, relatives and the whole community resources are truly limited.

On the 04-07-006 Mrs. Ikram got a chance to convene the first meeting in RAYS Hotel. 70 persons of the community attended this meeting including our brothers and sisters visiting the country and who really eager to support the organization.

This meeting was delayed because of her visits to all the six regions of Somaliland for the same purpose plus her parliamentary obligations. Prior to this meeting there was of course a big rally attended by a big crowd and dignitaries of this region and the idea of establishing this forum was fully accepted. Aboard of 17 members were elected and the name of Adal was adopted and agreed upon.

The persons of (70) who attended the meeting were accepted as the general assembly of the organization. This is the highest body of the organization. A subsequent meeting was held by the board on 22-07-006 and the executive management was elected on consensus and the names are below.

From the day the executive management was elected the writing of the constitution and the profile e of the organization soon began. At the same time we began building the constituent base of the organization and the strategic plan.

The realization of these goals is complicated here by their structure on volunteer members. The most difficult one is the human and financial resources.
To be honest, this took us some time raising funds to establish the office.

Now we have rented an office comprising of 3 rooms and one meeting hall to accommodate the activities of the organization. We have equipped with what our money can buy.

Adal is reporting today and will report the areas the community made significant progress despite the hard living conditions. We will also develop a mechanism to continuously monitor emerging trends and opportunities in the region from time to time. This will keep you in touch and a close relationship with your homeland.

Now we are confidently reporting the areas the community made progress in Borama of course your help was always there.

1. Borma Hospital.: This hospital is one of the best hospitals in Somaliland if not the first.
2. The SHABA water company: This Company made possible that the water run 24 hours. Borama is the only town where this has been achieved in the whole Somaliland.
3. Amoud University and the schools in Awdal are the first in Somaliland.
    
   The areas which need our attention are:

Roads: Borama is rapidly expanding both in population and construction. Any body who visits this city will immediately notice the appalling roads.

HOW CAN WE MAKE BORMA A COSMOPOLITAN CITY?

To answer this question, we thought to undertake the project of Asphalt roads in Borama as priority. To do this huge project, we want Awdal community all over the world to back this project and support. Success does not come easily and there is nothing impossible. Charity begins at home. The basic challenge to this plan is the ability to create unity, trust and commitment of our people.

Every one of us is to accept, understand and recognize the mission of this organization. The spirit and the unity which Sheikh Ali Jawher Secondary school was built in 1972 are highly required.

Sanitation: This project is being studied by the local government to privatize like the water.
We are planning a global fund rising to this project including Europe and North America.
